The staircase remembers everyone who climbed it. Step three still creaks with my grandfather's weight. Step seven holds my first heartbreak, the wood warped by tears. New residents complain: the stairs respond to ghosts, not feet. I know every step's history. I can't leave. The house remembers me too.
