Tempo

My heartbeat synced with our bedroom clock three months ago. Perfect mechanical rhythm, no variation. Comforting at first. Then he unplugged it last week. Three seconds of nothing, total cardiac silence, then my heart found a new tempo. Same precision. I don't know what's keeping time for me now. I'm afraid to find out what happens if it stops.
